Episode 395 - FOLKLORE AND CUMIN ON VIÐEY ISLAND

Today on RÚV English Radio, two events coming up on Viðey island.

Viðey is a small island just off the shore of Reykjavík. Famously, it is the location of the Yoko One Imagine Peace Tower, but this Saturday, August 17, you can enjoy stories from much further back in time. Björk Bjarnadóttir, environmental and ethnologist, will lead a walk for children and adults, and look at the sea and tell legends about sea otters, jellyfish, mermen and other creatures that inhabit the ocean. The origins of the hidden people will be discussed too.

Then on Tuesday of next week, 20 August, she will lead another walk to pick the wild cumin which grows on the island, and is now ready to be harvested. Guests are encouraged to bring cloth bags, scissors, and packed lunches - and can take home what they pick!

Both events are free, but guests must pay the cost of the short ferry crossings. On Saturday the group will sail at 1315 and return no later than 1530, while on Tuesday, the trip goes at 1800 and comes back at 2130 at the latest.

The ferry sails from Skarfabakki, also the meeting point for the two days, and you can buy tickets here - https://elding.is/videy-ferry-skarfabakki

Darren spoke to Björk about the folklore and the cumin!
