<ul><li data-block-key="t5boh">A volcanic eruption began just before 9:45 AM.</li><li data-block-key="4ogre">This is the eighth eruption in the Sundhnúkur crater row, and the eleventh since the new eruptive phase began on the Reykjanes peninsula in March 2023.</li><li data-block-key="4hg3o">The evacuation of Grindavík took place earlier today.</li><li data-block-key="euuda">Rescue workers were threatened with a firearm during the evacuation.</li><li data-block-key="2qjij">The fissure runs through the defensive barrier north of Grindavík.</li><li data-block-key="df81u">A new fissure formed even further south, closer to the town itself.</li><li data-block-key="ciie5">According to geophysicists, the eruption has significantly lost intensity.</li></ul>

Magma is still accumulating beneath Svartsengi and land is still rising but this doesn’t necessarily indicate that another eruption will occur, says a geophysicist. However, the more magma flows in, the higher the likelihood becomes.
